The Old Kingdom was the period of ancient Egyptian history best known for royal pyramid building, including Djoser’s Step Pyramid at Saqqara and the Great Pyramid at Giza. It was a period spanning several dynasties, not a single dynasty. Its monuments make more sense when you connect the buildings with the kings, beliefs and political organisation behind them.

When was the Old Kingdom?

A useful broad guide is about 2700–2200 BCE, although dates and period boundaries vary between chronologies. University College London describes the Old Kingdom as the Third to Sixth Dynasties. The Egyptian Museum’s timeline uses a longer definition that includes the Seventh and Eighth Dynasties. These are different historical conventions, not evidence that the Old Kingdom was one royal family.

Memphis was already part of Egypt’s Early Dynastic history before Djoser’s Third Dynasty pyramid complex.

The pyramids and their kings

Djoser and Saqqara

Djoser’s Third Dynasty complex at Saqqara marks a major development in monumental stone building and royal burial. The Step Pyramid has six stepped levels. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities associates its architectural innovation with Imhotep. Explore the Ministry’s description of the complex to understand the pyramid alongside its surrounding ceremonial spaces.

Stone architecture at Saqqara

Sneferu and Dahshur

Sneferu’s pyramid projects belong to the Fourth Dynasty. Dahshur’s Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid offer a different part of the story from Djoser’s stepped form at Saqqara. Treat Dahshur as its own archaeological visit rather than another name for Giza.

Khufu, Giza and the Sphinx

Khufu commissioned the Great Pyramid at Giza. The Great Sphinx is a separate monument: the Ministry’s archaeological account points to Khafre’s reign.

Art and beliefs beyond the pyramids

Royal sculpture and funerary writing reveal another side of the period. The Egyptian Museum’s seated statue of Djoser came from Saqqara and was originally painted. Its surviving form helps visitors look beyond the scale of the buildings to the way kingship was represented.

The Pyramid Texts are funerary writings found inside a number of pyramids. Their earliest known version is in Unas’s Fifth Dynasty pyramid at Saqqara. Their presence and date are specific to individual pyramids.

Why did the Old Kingdom end?

The decline involved weakening central authority and growing regional independence. UCL describes the loss of royal administrative control over parts of Upper Egypt late in the Sixth Dynasty. The transition into the First Intermediate Period is better understood as political fragmentation than as one clearly dated collapse caused by a single event.

Choose an Old Kingdom visit from Cairo

Our private Giza, Saqqara and Memphis day tour connects those three named stops. Our private Dahshur pyramids tour is a separate, focused route to the Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid. Choosing one does not mean that the other route’s sites are included.

Compare the wider collection of Cairo day tours, then use our guide to how many days to allow in Cairo and Giza to fit the visit into your trip. Share your dates, hotel location and main interests when enquiring. Check the named stops and admission details; pyramid interiors and special access should not be assumed to be included.

FAQs

Was the Old Kingdom one dynasty?

No. It spans several dynasties. The Third to Sixth Dynasties form a common definition, while some museum chronologies also include the Seventh and Eighth.

Did Khufu build the Great Sphinx?

Khufu is associated with the Great Pyramid. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities identifies archaeological evidence pointing to Khafre’s reign for the Sphinx.

Does a Giza tour automatically include Saqqara and Dahshur?

No. Read the specific programme. The Giza, Saqqara and Memphis route and the Dahshur-only route linked above are different products. Confirm any separate interior or special-access ticket before booking.
